How do I check advice before paying or signing?

Ask for the rule, the evidence, the scope and the cost in writing.

Source snapshot: 5 September 2026. Check current requirements with the issuing authority.

Understand the issue

Good advice should explain the facts used, the rule that applies and what remains uncertain. A professional title, family connection or confident tone is not the evidence itself.

Prepare your next steps

Ask for a written answer

Request the conclusion, assumptions, applicable jurisdiction, relevant date and official source.

Verify professional identity

For a CA, check the ICAI membership record. For a lawyer, ask for the enrolment details and verify with the relevant State Bar Council.

Separate fees and third-party payments

Ask for professional fees, statutory charges and other disbursements as separate items, with receipts.

Define the work and its limits

Specify deliverables, documents to be reviewed, exclusions, timetable and who keeps originals.

Get an independent second view when needed

For a large commitment, a conflict of interest or contradictory advice, take the same documents to someone unconnected to the transaction.

Questions for your adviser

Watch for

Pressure to sign blank papers, share OTPs, pay an unexplained “government fee” or avoid a second opinion is a reason to pause.

Who can help

A professional whose identity and relevant experience you can independently check.
