I want to move money from India overseas

Identify the source of funds, the permitted route and the bank’s evidence requirements.

Source snapshot: 5 September 2026. Check current requirements with the issuing authority.

Understand the issue

RBI’s remittance-of-assets facility permits eligible NRI/PIO remittances up to US$1 million per financial year under specified conditions. It is not a universal cap for every outward transfer, nor automatic permission for any funds.

Prepare your next steps

Trace the source

Describe whether the money is rent, savings, a property sale, inheritance or something else.

Ask the bank to identify the route

Confirm the applicable account and remittance category before arranging a large transaction.

Reconcile earlier remittances

For a limit-based facility, disclose other relevant transfers in that financial year.

Prepare the evidence

Ask for the bank’s current documentary and tax-compliance list, including whether particular declarations or CA certification are required.

Check the receiving end

Confirm beneficiary details, destination-bank requirements, charges and any reporting in your country of residence.

Documents to prepare

Questions for your adviser

Watch for

The US$1 million facility is not a fresh allowance for each property or each bank account.

Who can help

An authorised-dealer bank and a CA where tax documentation is required.
