What happens to my accounts when I return?
Prepare the bank review before moving money or closing an account.

Understand the issue
RBI account guidance addresses redesignation when circumstances change. Temporary visits and a return with an intention to stay need to be distinguished.
Prepare your next steps
List every account and holding
Include NRE, NRO, FCNR(B), resident accounts and investment platforms.
Tell institutions the purpose of the return
Provide the expected date and your intention regarding the stay.
Ask for account-specific instructions
Confirm redesignation, maturity treatment, mandates, KYC and any permitted alternative account.
Check tax treatment separately
Ask a CA how the income from each holding is treated in the relevant year.
Retain written confirmations
Keep the effective dates of changes and unresolved requests.
Documents to prepare
- Account and deposit list
- Move date and purpose
- Current mandates and nominations
- Written institution instructions
Questions for your adviser
- Which account changes are required now?
- What happens to deposits already running to maturity?
- What income needs separate tax review?
Watch for
A bank account’s label does not by itself settle the income’s tax treatment after your return.
Who can help
Your bank’s NRI/resident transition team and a CA.
