Can I vote in India while living abroad?

Check overseas-elector eligibility and the official registration route.

Source snapshot: 5 September 2026. Check current requirements with the issuing authority.

Understand the issue

Eligible Indian citizens living abroad can use Form 6A for overseas-elector registration. OCI cardholders cannot vote. Registration does not itself provide remote voting.

Prepare your next steps

Confirm citizenship

Establish whether you remain an Indian citizen and have not acquired foreign citizenship.

Check the ECI eligibility instructions

Read the overseas-voter guidance and the relevant passport-address requirements.

Prepare the Form 6A evidence

Follow the official list rather than a generic agent checklist.

Check your application and electoral entry

Use the Election Commission’s official services.

Confirm how to vote

Check the current ECI instructions; overseas electors ordinarily vote in person at their polling station with the required passport.

Watch for

OCI status or an old voter card does not preserve voting eligibility after foreign citizenship is acquired.
